A page for family and friends to share their own memories of Martyn
Martyn's grandparentsMartyn was very close to his grandparents; Grampy - Harold and Granny - Margaret Chapman. These are two of the sweetest photos of Marty and them together at a family meal out at The Polgooth Inn. Martyn lived next door to his grandparents in Enniscaven at an early age before moving to Summercourt. He returned to live at Enniscaven in 2014, when Martyn fulfilled his dream of building his own home on some land that his grandparents had given to him. Martyn spent many happy times with his grandparents and particularly enjoyed taking his Grampy to The Royal Cornwall Show each year.

There are no words. Marty was an inspiration and loved by us all and remembering his grasstrack days and always smiling.

My memory of Marty is when he would come out and help me with calming myself down on the start line. He taught me the 'Marty wiggle' which I will do at every race meeting to always remember him.

A few of the things that makes us smile when think of our time spent with Martyn:
- aSlurp technology! What's that all about?"
- Silly Cornish revisions to the Highway Code - e.g. You can drive under the influence providing your home is within 6 miles of the pub.
- Second helpings of roast dinner with cauliflower cheese.
- Always joined me (Sarah) in just one more glass of wine. Hic hic!!
- Baggy jeans and a duffel coat.
- Giving me (Sarah) my first and last lesson on a digger - the only instruction being: "Press any lever - if it goes wrong, lift your hands in the air".
- Always room for a Cornish pasty - whatever the time.
- His love of Cornwall.
- Checking the dial on the kitchen to see whether the oil had gone down another notch.
One occasion, which I remember as one of the funniest was when Marty travelled with us to a ski trip in the winter. We were waiting on a train station and found some seats where we could sit down. Marty ended up sitting next to a homeless guy who was having a snooze. Then Marty let off a fart. The fart was so potent and the smell so intense that it woke up the homeless guy and he left. We were all in stitches.

Everything you have achieved will be an inspiration for generations of your family and friends. A rock as a friend and role model to me. A sharp wit that could never be matched. Loyalty and trust were the spine of your life. Marty, I will never forget you. You will never be gone to me.

We will forever have the fondest of memories - laughing, joking and stitching everyone up. Martyn was the kindest, loyalist and genuine person you'll ever be lucky enough to meet. Always in our thoughts and hearts! Mike and Vicky Oswick
Marty, I'll always remember the day we had in Newquay drinking. I think it was bank holiday and you grabbed my arms and got loads of teenagers to get me with their super soakers. Funniest day ever.

Eating, Marty putting ice cream on Em's nose! (Regular occurrence - not always ice cream!), the flicks - lots of movie nights with lots of sweets and popcorn for Marty! Nicknames - depending on Hobbit's mood... from Fraggle to Gremlin - I loved them all, they made me smile. Crumble, custard, ice cream. Obviously! (the only way to eat it).
Beach BBQ on Crantock beach sand dunes - Marty and Em fighting in the sand (more like cheesy wrestling). Marty got sand all over Em so she retaliated and they rolled around like a couple of loons! Each trying to beat the other up worse. Then Marty tipped Em up and she face planted the sand... VERY FUNNY for us - the hobbit wasn't so impressed but that made it even funnier for Marty who told her she'd end up getting hurt! He then tried to put her glasses back on her head and pat her down while she did a comedy sulk. Marty tried to be caring and considerate but laughed the whole way through.

Although we have never known you without illness, you have shown us that life is for living, for dealing with any obstacle in the way and for bringing out the positive in any situation no matter how hard it must of been to bear at times. Your memories will last a lifetime and that is something so precious and can never be reduced.

Marty had such a kind soul with a wicked sense of humour, the ultimate practical joker and saw the opportunity for fun and laughter everywhere he went xx one of my fondest memories is going to the gun competition and auction, Marty bought half the lots, followed by a BBQ at the stunning Glynndawny where go's with the air riffle continued under Marty's keen eye, I'm sure he had a giggle at my terrible shot!

"You're my favourite" Mike Wiltshire |

Mike (one of Marty's many friends) worked at the bungalow putting in the plumbing with his brother Graham. Marty could always be heard telling each of them separately that they were his favourite. It became a standing joke with the Wiltshire's.
Do you remember Marty, when you were afraid of me!!? Your lovely long hair and you just had your nipple pierced. We always wanted to have a look and you zipped up your anorak right to the top and put your hands in your pocket. An honour and a privilege to have known you xxx

- Bacon BBQ in the summer, Em and Marty sitting on their chair like an old married couple. So lovely!
- Clay pigeon shoot day - buying up the place in the live auction! Marty was gutted when he missed out on the penguin! A fab day! Followed by air rifle shoot out and BBQ - Gorgeous day!
Marty helped Emma fulfil one of her dreams to have a classic Fiat 500. After bringing it back to Cornwall, Marty and Emma set about stripping it down to restore it and give it a new paint job - PEA GREEN!
We first saw the car after it had been newly resprayed. It was a shell with no engine, doors or sun roof, but it did have brakes. Marty asked us to help free-wheel the car back to the lock-up at Paul Eddies shed. This entailed pushing him down a very steep hill. During this time, Marty (the joker) kept popping his head up through the hole in the roof and looking back at us with a big grin on his face. As he pulled into the drive of the shed, a Police car drove past and narrowly missed the naughty but fun ride Marty had.

Marty was a valued member of the team and contributed to the organisation in many ways. Many of us knew Marty personally and his chirpy personality was well loved among our staff. We are so sad that he wasn't able to come back to us. Through these last years, Marty has shown tremendous courage, which has been an inspiration to us all. He will be sadly missed.

Marty was never one to take life seriously. My memories will always be of him taking every chance possible to wind Emma up, whilst winking at and nudging all around him. He always kept a straight face until Emma realised and they both shared the look! A true gentleman.

Me and Mark were down in Cornwall to visit you and Marty. We were staying with you in Sticker. One night I needed to brush my teeth and I wanted to go to the downstairs bathroom. Marty was at that time, using the downstairs toilet and he left the door open. So I was stood in the hallway and I couldn't decide if I should just go past or if I should better wait. So while I was trying to make up my mind, Marty had finished and he came out from the toilet only dressed in his bathrobe which he was pulling across as he was walking. He saw me standing in the corner and thought I was a right pervert / stalker! This or similar things happened to Marty and me a lot so it became a running joke.

Another great memory is from a birthday surprise my partner Dan arranged for me at his parents house. Dan's mum had done an amazing spread of food and to my surprise great friends Em, Marty, Lucy and Lily arrived and we had a wonderful night with great food, drinks and tons of giggles with fantastic company.

The best birthday cake Marty could have wished for, at his birthday BBQ on 2 August 2014, at Glynndawny. His love of Lego and the Millennium Falcon was always a topic of conversation.
Although we had only known Martyn for 3 years, we both felt we had known him for a lifetime. He was a very special person, very easy to talk to and so humorous even when he really didn't feel very well. It is quite rare for a person to understand Jim's sense of humour but he did and I will always remember them laughing together. He made us feel so welcome when we came to his birthday BBQ, showing us around the beautiful home that you had both worked so hard to create.

A little known fact which only seemed to be known by Marty!
A memory of Marty and Emma's home in Sticker
We were going to have a good old English breakfast, but as it was too late for breakfast, it would have to be brunch. I had the bacon and sausages grilling, beans in microwave ready, eggs ready to crack and fry and bread ready to toast. Marty was at the sink washing mushrooms, taking his time I thought. I looked over and he was diligently removing all the stalks and disregarding them. When I asked him why he was doing this, he replied: "They're poisonous". I laughed and told him that it wasn't true and popped one into my mouth to prove it. He gasped and we both laughed. We cooked the chopped up cups and stalks, but Marty still only ate the cups.

I remember Marty so well. A brave young man struggling with a cancer diagnosis. Having Emma by his side supporting him all the way. He was always positive in clinic and cheerful. Who knows how he really felt when he was alone. He had a very supportive family and Emma was never far away. I remember them getting married and bringing in their wedding pics. I remember him giving me a fob watch to thank me for what I had done. I did no more than my job but felt honoured to receive the watch. I wear it with pride.
Thank you Emma for preparing this memories link for Marty. He will always be remembered.
